Client: Imagine Filmfestival
Location: Eye Filmmuseum Amsterdam
Event: Exhibition
Assignment: The festival’s 2018 theme was storytelling, and this theme needed to become visible throughout the (large) Eye Filmmuseum, home of the festival.
I curated an exhibition inspired by Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey – a blueprint for screenwriting since the mid-seventies. By following the yellow line throughout thebuilding, audiences were confronted with artistic renditions of all 17 steps of the Hero’s Journey. The 17 steps consisted of new artwork especially made for the occasion, existing artwork that fit one of the 17 steps and artwork derived from or inspired by the filmselection of the festival.
Some of the highlights included:
-A man-sized sculpture by artist Charl Landvreugd
-A large floorsticker by comic artist Yasmin Sheikh
-A display of Harry Potter storyboards by Temple Clark (guest of the festival)
-Difficult film questions on the stairs leading to the auditorium (as the ‘Road of Trials’)
We also designed a small folder with info on all of the 17 steps, the artists and the relation between the works on display and the Hero’s Journey.

Next to this, I worked intensively with students fashion and audio-design from the HKU, teaching them about storytelling and fantastic film. They made some amazing works for the exhibition.
VPRO magazine did an interview and article about the project.
