Genre: choose your own story walking route
Format: analogue pervasive game
kiesjeverhaal.nl
About the game:
Kies je Verhaal is a walking route through a part of a city via small signs that convey part of a story. Every story part ends with a choice between two actions, and each action will send you to another location, where the story will continue. This project explores new possibilities to offer narrative choices-gameplay in live-action surroundings, just like I did in ‘Save the World’, but this time fully analogue.
The project has been developed for the city of Utrecht, fall 2018. A new version of the game was made for the city of Delft during the summer of 2019.
What I did:
This is a solo project I designed and wrote. Layout of the signs and production were done by a small team (see website for full credits).
Event design:
This project is part of my ongoing series of narrative artworks that are designed to change an existing location. Both in Utrecht and Delft the project was commissioned by the culture department of the city council, and in both cases there was an intensive trajectory of finding the right spots and routes for the walk. There is a community arts-feel to the project; citizens and organisations are actively invited to volunteer their outside wall for the project. But there’s more to it than that; the entire walk needs to feel fulfilling, whichever route you take, and the locations need to have something special to them that makes you look twice.
